Blended Cements

A Glimpse on Qualities of Blended Cements

“Home is where heart is”. Our home is a place where we live, share, laugh, cry, celebrate and experience different phases of our lives. Wherever we go, but coming back home is gives us a sense of security and satisfaction. We all want to gift our loved ones a secure place. Life has become a risk now, increasing population and high risk of earthquakes has made life insecure. Hence, it is essential to choose the proper material for your house so that your loved ones could live without strain.
In the market of materials needed for home making, cement plays an important role. It is the key material and should be chosen wisely. Technically talking, cement is a binder which can bind other material together. It is a mixture of limestone and clay. It is a fine mineral powder manufactured with very precise processes. When submerged with water, it hardens and binds the material used with it.

Types of Cement Grades-
With the various uses of cements, there are a variety of them which can be used. Different types of cements are-
·         Gray Ordinary Portland Cement- mainly composed of clinker.
·         White Portland Cement-composed of limestone and kaolin clay
·         Masonry or Mortar- mainly used for brick work
·         Oil-Well Cement- applicable for different depth, chemical aggression or pressure levels.
·         Blended Cement- composed of pozzolans, fly ash, and silica fume.
Specifically here we discuss about Blended Cements-
Blendedcement is obtained by mixing Portland cement with mineral admixtures or additives like fly ash, slag or silica fumes. Blended cements have many advantages on ordinary Portland cement and are now-a-days considered to be superior. Presently in India about 30% of the total production is blended cement. In UK and USA, the usage of blended cement is nearly 90% of total production.

Advantages of Blended Cement-
Blended Cements
·         Blended cement reduces water demand thereby reducing the water-cement ratio.
·         Workability is improved.
·         Blended cements are considered to be finer than OPC (ordinary Portland cement).
·         Permeability of concrete is less which improves durability.
Apart from the technical advantages, blended cement also has environmental advantages.
·         Saves Energy- blended cements are mineral admixtures with OPC hence the energy which would have otherwise been utilized for production of OPC, is saved. The saving is up to 0.8 to 1.2 MWH/ton of cement.
·         Natural Resources are Conserved- blended cements use admixtures, which are the waste products of thermal and steel plant. By using these, we are conserving silica, limestone and cay.
·         Controls Pollution- It has been estimated that 7% of the total pollution is only due to cement production. As blended cement reduces the production of cement up to a level, hence it controls pollution.

Penna Cement-
One of the most famous and trusted brand of cement is Penna Cement, founded in 1991. Located in Hyderabad, this brand receives demand of cements from small house owners to real state dealers. They have grown organically by developing in-house expertise across entire value chain in the cement industry. At Penna, they believe in building quality relationships.
So if you are one of those in line to build up your house, do consider the cements you use and the brand you choose.
